The 10x30 Montebello Mural was painted on canvas at Caplinger’s desert home, Desert Art Studio in 29 Palms, CA--in his specially constructed “outdoor art studio”--then delivered and installed at the Metro
Rail Station site wall. The finished mural was officially unveiled on Sept. 27, 1997.

Chuck Caplinger’s assistant artist on this mural was longtime friend Lee Kiefer of Los Angeles (at left in both photos). The artists are seen here working on the mural in September
1997.

Unlike his other on-site murals, where Caplinger paints directly onto an exterior building wall, the Montebello Mural was painted at his home studio first--on a sun-screen material that was prepared to resemble
artist’s canvas, and designed to be installed on an exterior wall like wallpaper and to be highly resistant to the elements.
